Nestled between rugged cliffs, Praia dos Caneiros is Ferragudo’s closest beach, located only a five-minute drive from Quinta Heights. Characterised by a small cove of golden sands and views of the ocean towards an isolated rock named Leixão da Gaivota (Seagul”s Leap), its shielded position makes it ideal for soaking up the sun, swimming, and snorkelling.

Considered by many as one of the best viewpoints in Portugal, the monument is situated east along the coast in Carvoeiro. Once in this resort town, Algar Seco can be reached along the boardwalk, starting at the Fort of Nossa Senhora da Encarnação on Carvoeiro’s Beach and walking along the 570-metre footbridge that runs along the top of Algar Seco’s cliffs.
The beauty of this naturally eroded portion of cliffs is showcased in the famed Boneca formation. This lookout provides an unbeatable perspective of the sea as if looking out through the eyes of a doll — hence the title ‘Boneca’.
Medieval oceanfront castles don’t get much more rustic than the Fort of São João do Arade in Ferragudo. Situated between Praia da Angrinha and Praia Grande and built in the 15-16th century, the fortress was erected at the mouth of the River Arade to protect the surrounding area. In harmony with the Fort of Santa Catarina, across the water in Portimão, the pair of forts acted as a secure stronghold against any potential invasions.
Although the castle remains the private property of writer Joaquim José Coelho de Carvalho, it makes for a majestic backdrop for sunny days along the coast.
Quinta Heights is in close proximity to one of Portugal’s most famous natural landmarks. Located a 20 minute drive away is the spectacular Benagil Cave. Easily accessible by boat or kayaking and paddleboarding from Benagil beach, this picturesque formation provides a unique day trip. From the outside, the cave’s imposing appearance has been likened to that of a cathedral, and from the inside, its vibrant yellow hues are complemented by reflections of the azure blue sea that gently laps back and forth.
For sunset views and delicious food to match, the Sky Bar on top of the Tivoli hotel provides a privileged lookout over Carvoeiro’s coastline.
